This is very important for a DJ, so that he can listen to the music before mixing it, and also to mix smoothly. Each channel also usually has a level fader that can be used to adjust the level of that channel.

The crossfader is one of the other most important features of any DJ mixer. This is a method of easily and smoothly mixing between two different sources, and might feature different curve options, sometimes including very fast (short) curves for fast scratching.

A DJ mixer is different form recording or live mixers, especially in that they have a crossfader and headphone cuing. So don't think that a different type of sound mixer can do the same job.
