How is Stress and Acne Connected

When your stressed at work do you feel like your acne outbreaks increase? When you're upset do you notice that you get more pimples? It's been argued by Dermatologists for a long time what the exact relationship between acne and stress is.

Heredity is a huge factor in whether you will get acne or not, but now doctors realize that this unfortunate skin condition can be connected to other factors as well, such as having a bad diet or high amounts of stress.

Many have known that stress can have an impact on your immune system. No matter what illness or disease you are inflicted with, lots of stress can either make your condition better or worse.

It's a fact people produce more hormones as a reaction to stress or being upset. Oil glands are especially impacted by male hormones. The result is too much sebum is produced when the gland becomes overactive. Acne will generally occur once the pores become clogged with too much sebum.

Not only can stress aggravate existing breakouts, it can make your overall skin look bad. Cortisol is produced when there sebum is present in the skin in quantities that are too large. This is because when cortisol is released into the sebaceous glands it gives an oily appearance on the skin's surface.

Whether you are taking over the counter medication or prescription medications to treat your acne, lowering your stress level can make make a huge difference for your skin condition.

Here are some suggestions to reduce stress and improve your health. If you follow these tips you are more likely improve your skin, but also battle acne at the same time.

* Reduce Caffeine - When you ingest too many caffeinated products such as, coffee, tea's or sodas your stress levels go up. When you reduce the consumption of these items your heart rate will slow down, you will feel more calm and have less headaches.

* Exercise - It's been known that exercising is one of the best ways for reducing stress. In less than 30 minutes you can relieve tension, stress and anxiety. Try going for a walk or doing something fun. Many people get stuck thinking that exercise is unpleasant when it doesn't have to be. By changing your view of exercise you're more likely to do it and do it regularly.

* Make changes in what you eat. One of the biggest things you can do for your health is eat better. Too much sugar in the diet is bad for your skin and can cause behavioral issues in young people. Increase the amount of vegetables and fruit you eat and lower the amount of sugar and processed foods. Not only will you look better your health will greatly improve.

* Get outside - Being outside not only helps relieve stress, but getting some sun will stimulate Vitamin D production in your skin which leads to better looking skin. Even a small amount of time outside will have positive affects on your body.

No matter what type of acne treatment you choose to help fight acne, by reducing your stress you increase your chances of having beautiful skin and a healthier life.
