LASIK is a vision correction operation. When successful, many people don't need their glasses ever again. This procedure uses a laser to reshape the cornea. First you will need to see your eye surgeon to see if you are a good candidate to have a LASIK surgery. One of the problems would be refractive instability. If your vision isn't stable you usually won't risk a LASIK surgery. Other reasons you might not be able to use LASIK could be: previous eye surgery, eye injuries, and certain eye diseases, to name a few. You need to do some things to prepare. If you wear contacts you need to stop using them for some time before the surgery. This is necessary because contacts affect the shape of the cornea. Things are pretty then straight forward. First you need to keep creams, lotions, make up, and perfumes off of you for one day before the surgery. This is to prevent any type of infections or irritations in the eyes. You will be in surgery for about thirty minutes. This is an out patient procedure. You will need someone to drive you home after surgery. During the surgery you will be asked to focus on a point of light. The ability to do to this, for a minute or so, is required to do the surgery. You will be tested to make sure this won't be a problem. The actual surgery involves cutting and peeling back a flap of the outer skin of the eye. This exposes the part of the cornea that will be reshaped. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea to improve your vision. You need to allow this flap to heal. There are no stitches so you cannot bump or rub your eyes for a while. You will be given eye shields to use when you sleep so nothing goes wrong. Strenuous contact activities, like football, should be avoided for at least a month. Keeping creams and makeup out of the eye area to avoid infection is critical. Swimming and hot tubs should be avoided for a couple of months. You will need to take medicated eye drops for a week after surgery. Most people see improved vision almost immediately. It can take three to six months for your vision to stabilize.
