One of England's oldest and most respected sailing clubs, The Royal Mersey Yacht Club (RMYC), has welcomed their latest recruit, the King of Norway. The RMYC hosted His Majesty King Harald V of Norway as he accepted an honorary life membership.The club, founded in 1844, has a history of notable members such as the Prime Minister at the time of its founding, Sir Robert Peel. The club is currently working with Wirral Council on a massive redevelopment of the coastline from Rock Ferry up to Eastham.The king was invited by Dr Nicholas Jedyanakiewicz, former commodore, who showed him around the club. He was then welcomed by the present Commodore David Massey and other flag officers.David Massey, club commodore said: "We are delighted to welcome such an accomplished and passionate sailor as His Majesty to the club." The RMYC is proud of its traditions and heritage and has long been a vanguard of local regenerations. The club currently races three classes of modern and classic keelboats and races both at international level.The King is a renowned sailor and represented his country sailing in the Olympic team three times. He has won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at a variety of European and international Championships.Chief Executive of the Wirral, Steve Maddox and Mayor Andrew Hodson joined the club members and the King for lunch in the club and enjoyed a display of their racing yachts. His Majesty was then presented with a book demonstrating the Wirral's links with Norway, written by local author Stephen Harding.After viewing some of the boats, the Commodore escorted the King on board the yacht Momentus and took him on a cruise of the racing waters. They sailed past the world heritage waterfront of Liverpool and via Albert Dock before visiting GL Watson & Co Ltd, the oldest dedicated yacht design firm in the world.The RMYC held a reception dinner in the King's Honour at the Town Hall of Liverpool where he was presented with the clubs flags to celebrate the clubs continuing links with royalty.
