Proficient slalom water skiers ski on one ski, but becoming comfortable on a single ski takes time. The majority of beginning skiers find it best to begin by skiing with two skis. Once you can ski with both skis, the next step is to learn to slalom. People familiar with slalom water skiing say that it can be one of the most enjoyable sports on the water.In single-footed skiing, it is important that the skier know which of their feet is dominant. This is crucial because the dominant foot is used on the back of the ski to aid balance and provide some control when the skier is performing slalom turns. Many skiers find that their dominant hand and foot are on the same side of their body.Start out with a bar instead of a rope, this will help you in the beginning stages. You can start on two skies and once your confident you can stay up you can drop one of your skies. Making the boot larger or layering the inside with soap can help. Once you have dropped the ski and your dominant foot is free put it at the back of your ski.Now try using the rope instead of the bar. It will be harder but if you can complete the exercise with the bar you should be able to do it with the rope too. After you feel fairly confident in your abilities to stay up its time for the next step.This may be the hardest step but is essential to learning how to Slalom ski. You have to get up out of the water using the rope and not the bar. If your left foot is forward put it on your right ski and vice versa for the other foot. Following these steps will allow you to better keep your balance and get up easier.The next step is also extremely important, though some people do not do much of it while they are learning: practice. Practice is the one thing that is sure to make you feel more comfortable while you are learning how to ski.This can be one of the funnest parts of skiing. Getting outside of the wake can be lots of fun if done right. Apply pressure to your ski with your back foot in the direction that you want to go in. You may find it necessary to apply a large amount of pressure to get outside however with practice this will get easier. For added effect practice trying to get up as much spray as possible.Cutting back into the wake is the last step. This can seem very difficult, but it is as important as any of the other steps. Cutting back into the wake is similar to getting outside of the wake. The key is using as much pressure as possible from your back foot. Some skiers can also get air using this technique. Once you are confident as a water skier, you will be able to show off to your jealous neighbors as well as your friends.
