By: Steven Bright

Many believe that the history of this holiday that is celebrated on February 14th every year is based on the story of early Roman times. A man named Valentine was a clergyman and that the ruler at the time was a fellow called Claudius II, an emperor, who was ruling Rome.

Today Valentine's Day is marked by couples exchanging gifts of flowers, candy, jewelry and other fine items. Taking pictures for Valentine's Day is also an important part of the day, with photographers busy snapping photos of couples in love.

Ceremonies for young couples in love in spite of the orders of the emperor. When the emperor had discovered what Valentine was doing, he was outraged and had him executed. So, there are several theories of what exactly is the meaning behind the holiday made for love, but regardless of the true reasons, it is a day to give gifts, flowers and cards to those that we care about.

Even the elderly in nursing homes are not forgotten on this day. There are often small parties planned for the older people where they are served special cookies, pies and treats in honor of this special holiday.

Many young men wish to surprise the women that they love by purchasing expensive gifts such as diamond rings, large stuffed animals, beautiful bouquets of flowers or even a romantic dinner in a fine restaurant. Valentine's Day is also a day that many men choose to propose marriage to their sweethearts because it is considered 'the day of love'. Many couples want to be sure to remember this special day by taking pictures for Valentine's Day so that the memories can live on for years.

Many couples also pick the 14th day of February as the day to marry. What a better day to exchange vows with the person you love than on Valentine's Day?

So, as noted, there are many, many ways to celebrate St. Valentine's Day, but one thing everyone can agree on, is that the 14th of February is a day set aside to honor love and to honor the loved ones in our lives.
