The Wonders Of Story Bridge

By: Patrick Daniels

Linking the inner city suburbs of Fortitude Valley and Kangaroo Point is Brisbane's' Story Bridge. Story Bridge was names after John Douglas Story, a prominent public servant under the secretary for education between 1906 and 1920. The Story Bridge was built to divert traffic away from the central business district.

Story Bridge was opened in July of 1940, and the design was heavily based on the Jacque Cartier Bridge in Montreal. It is the prominent feature in the Fiver River display and each night the bridge becomes illuminated. Story Bridge has also become a popular tourist and recreation spot, as you can take a guided walk to the top of the bridge.

The guided walk is an 80 metre high climb above the Brisbane River and takes around two and a half hours. While walking your tour guide educated you on the history of the bridge as well as Brisbane and local landmarks. While walking you will also be enjoying a remarkable view stretching from the Glass House Mountains in the north to Brisbane's Moreton Bay and Islands down to the Gold Coast region. These walks are available to all individuals over the age of 10 and 130 cm or more in height. They are open all week and climbs are available through the day, twilight and night.

The top of Story Bridge has also become a very popular place to propose. Since the opening of the tours in 2005 there have been an average of 120 couples signing up each each for Valentines Day climbs, over 500 proposals and 2 wedding ceremonies.

After you climb the bridge a great place to relax and grab a meal is in the Story Bridge hotel. This Hotel opened in the late 1800's and is a local favourite. Story Bridge Hotel is responsible for the launch of the National Festive of Beers and the internally famous Australian Cockroach Races. The hotel also has a bar located in what used to be a WWII bomb shelter and an upper level, velvet walled martini bar. If you are looking for something outdoors you can always go to Captain Burke Park, located under the Bridge, which is a great place for picnics or a Barbecue.
