Why We Should Drink Eight Glasses Of Water Each Day

By: Maria Esposito

Around about 2.5 litres of water is required on a daily basis for an adult to replace fluid losses that occur through the feces, urine, skin and lungs.

Just under half of this should be in the form of drinks such as water or cold herbal teas and just under a litre from food. The remaining 300ml is created by the body from its own metabolic processes.

Problems that arise from not drinking enough water is as follows.

1. Increase in pulse rate and in rectal temperature

2. Respiration increases

3. Tingling and numbness of fingers and feet

4. Increase in concentration of the blood

5. Reduced blood volume and more difficult circulation of the blood

Problems and inadequacies of the circulatory system under conditions of inadequate fluid intake leads to:

1. breathing difficulties

2. gastrointestinal upsets

3. nauseousness and loss of appetite

4. eventually difficulty in muscular movements and emotional instability

In an animal study, where water was restricted the animals were highly irritable and in some cases bad tempered.

Thirst

Under a great deal of physical activity it has been demonstrated that a man will only choose to drink half of the water intake needed to replace losses from sweat and urine. It takes a period of rest and a meal for the cravings for water to return to replace losses.

Hot Drinks

Ingestion of hot drinks may cause internal body temperature to rise, which will result in sweating in order to cool the body down. Hot drinks are sometimes used in medical practice when it is desired either to temporarily increase body temperature of induce sweating. Therefore cold or cool drinks are preferred to hot drinks to replace fluid during the day, especially if the hot drinks are the only fluid daily intake.

Sugary drinks

During periods of physical activity that last under an hour and a half, water is the preferred choice. However drinks that contain a small amount of carbohydrate can sustain power better than water alone during activities that would create fatigue in an hour or longer.
